Amorphous metals continue to boost their reputation as energy saving, eco-friendly materials and are capturing keen attention in countries around the world for use in the iron cores of distribution transformers. Hitachi Metals has been active in the amorphous metal field since 1977, when it undertook consigned research into production technology for this genre of metals from the Research Development Corporation of Japan (the present-day Japan Science and Technology Agency). Then in 2003, Hitachi Metals acquired the amorphous metal business division of Honeywell International Inc., of the United States. This enabled the company to add amorphous metals used in distribution transformer iron cores to its product lineup, effectively elevating itself to the status of the world’s largest manufacturer of amorphous metals. Since April 2011, production of these materials has been underway at the Metglas Yasugi Works, newly launched as a Japanese domestic plant, as well as the plant of Metglas, Inc., of the United States.
