The tatara discussed up to this point is the early modern tatara ironworking that was perfected in the middle years of the Edo Period. However, given that the word tatara dates to ancient time, and if we further regard it as something that was transmitted to Japan together with the importation of iron manufacturing technology, then the history of the tatara is itself the history of iron making in Japan.
